Hi Maggie

We have had the Sonnenschein/ Exide  200ah gel batteries for 12 years and replaced them with the same last year. A good solid battery .

tayna.co.uk were very good to us as they are happy to honour the Zero rate vat under the 744c ruling saving us some £200 plus should your barge be applicable.

i hope this helps

Since I have webcams and other stuff running during the winter, we do stay connected to shore power
And unlike the USA, in NL the sun is hiding from September to June, so the solar wont do much to keep te batteries, with all these cameras and other gadgets abusing the electricity

So we have programmed the multis to pretend the shore power is a 'generator'
Now with my Li batteries, I have the shore power coming on when I get close to 20 % SOC and of when I am at 70 %.

Thanks Tim for your advice.
I am leaning more towards Victron which is what I have fitted now. I think 9 years is a good lifespan for them bearing in mind what they have been subjected to. I am thinking however with fitting some AGM batteries for the Bowthruster only as I think that using the bowthruster off the GEL batteries has not helped their performance. I think that the Victron Charger / Inverter will be suitable for charging both battery banks looking at the specification sheet for GEL and AGM's. I think I will have a look at the programming of the Multi Plus Compact and the Multi Controller that I have while the old batteries are fitted so that I don't mess up the new ones !!
I would be interested to know why the Internal Resistance of the batteries has increased so significantly and whether there is anything that can be done to restore the resistance to near correct value if the cause is as a result of material build-up on the plates.

If you have a Victron Multplus or Quattro, you can also program them with “ignore AC”
so in that case the shorepower is connected but will be ignored until a certain moment, for example when the voltage drops below a certain point, or by capacity, many things to program.
i used this feature on my friend's barge, and their consumption drastically went down, ofcourse they have solar panels as well.
The shorepower only kicks in when it reaches the programmed settings.

better not use AGM as a domestic battery, GEL is way better and more forgiven than AGM

I have a 12 volt system. One advantage of the Victron GEL or AGM's is their size. The beam of my Sagar is 3.2 mtr so space in the engine room is a bit tight.  The 4 Nr: 135 AH Victrons will fit in the available space. The Exide batteries are a little longer and heavier and wont be that easy to fit in place.  I am like you in that I dont like connecting to shore power when not onboard especially over winter. I have solar panels on the wheelhouse roof which provide all power requirements during sunny days but when the wheelhouse cover is on over winter I have a smaller solar panel that keeps the battery bank topped up. Many thanks for all the comments to my post !

They are for sure not a drop in replacement I think you have a good plan ... if that helps

I'm not sure I am ready yet for Lithium Batteries but at some stage I am sure that this will be the way forward.

Yes shorepower does mask when batteries begin to fail but 9 years is a good period, so seems not unreasonable to replace them now.
We bought 125ah  Agms as previously fitted from Ecobat in Belgium, in France may still trade as Manbat as in Uk.
We are now 7 years on this set but no longer keep shorepower on in winter as became suspicious it may not be good when no load. Solar gives enough even in winter to maintain any losses.
Are you 12 or 24 volt ?

we got the LiFePO batteries from Eco-Lithium , which is also a Vitctron dealer and support contact.
Same price as GEL batteries.

Using Exide batteries keeps things simple as they use the same charge algorithm as Victron AGM/Gel.
