Thank you for your recommendation. In the meantime, I had asked a friend of mine who is a lawyer to take a look at the contract that the broker had sent and we adjusted it a bit. The final transfer of the boat will be done by a notary, so I hope all will be going well :).

This company (ask for Hannah) was fantastic in helping us by a UK barge but last year (we are American) as there were contingencies and we wanted a professional to guide us ... they will certainly help you find a Dutch contact if that is needed.

Good luck,

A Dutch broker would normally arrange for a notary, who in the Netherlands is obliged to be neutral in overlooking the transaction.  It's not a problem.

In the Netherlands people usually use HISWA contracts for boat purchases.  This is a standard contract with standard protection.  No lawyer is needed.  A notary is also used to record the deed if the boat is on the kadaster.

Nike - Welcome to the wonderful world of inland waterways boating and good luck with your proposed purchase.

If the broker handling the sale is HISWA registered, and your use the HISWA contract for the Dutch-registered vessel, you are pretty safe.  More important is a good survey.

Peter

Hello you lovely Barge-People,

soon, I hope to join your jolly group of Barge owners! Since I am fairly new to these types of boats and have read some not so amusing pruchase adventures here on the forum, I would like to use a solicitor / lawyer to help me set up the purchase contract for the Barge that I am hoping to buy.

The boat is being sold by a Dutch Broker, is located in the NL and has a Dutch Registry, so from what I have been reading here in the Forum, a Dutch Lawyer would be the way to go, correct? Could anyone recommend a Dutch Lawyer that has experience with purchase Contracts for Barges? (I did check the Directory but could only find surveyors - maybe I looked in the wrong spot, though :))

Thanks so much and looking forward to hear from you!
Sunny greetings from Italy,
Nike
