SAMPLE MOORING GUIDE

This Guide has been compiled from contributions by DBA members. Please assist in keeping it up to date by sending amendments or additions to the editor, Bill Jaques moorings@barges.org

If your amendments are minor just list them in an email.

If they are extensive then you might incorporate your new data in the affected box, copy it and email back to the editor (or send the entire guide). Please use a different colour or font, or the “track changes” facility in the reviewing menu of Word, so that changes can be easily identified.

Canal or River

Canal de la Marne à la Saône - vers la Saône

Summary

A scenic but predominantly rural canal.There is limited traffic on this canal but peniches will be encountered from time to time (averaged at least 1 a day - June 2005). 28 of the 43 locks between the summit and the Saône are automated; the others are handled by travelling lock-keepers. Each day, you will be asked when you wish to start and how far you intend to go. Stick to your plan or risk losing your “slot”, and a long wait. Most of the villages en route are small, without shops and restaurants; water is only available at lock 22 and, possibly, 29. Good places to moor are limited, and bankside moorings should be chosen with great care – commercial traffic makes mooring to stakes unsatisfactory. There are substantial widely spaced posts (intended for péniches) on the non-towpath side in most biefs in the upper reaches and some disused commercial quays which serve well enough.

Remarks	A useful place to stop while awaiting permission to transit the tunnel, as it is close to the lock, where the éclusier controls the tunnel (which itself is over 1 km away)

Mooring	Satisfactory - left bank above ecl 9 between bridges			100m concrete commercial quay with satisfactory bollards. Depth 1.5m

Remarks	In the middle of a chain of automated locks – Inform VNF if you intend to stop. Nothing much here; Dismal industrial ambience, better to moor at Piepape

Mooring	4m concrete platform with 2 bollards	Only about 4m long, in a bay, but with good solid bollards and space to overhang. Max depth 1.20 by quay, less in overhang
Facilities & Costs	None				None
Local Amenities	Bar/tabac in village 1 Km; Boulangerie, Butcher & "Casino" at Chateau Fontaine about 3km - follow signs from bar.

Local Amenities	la Poste (1km) Auberge (lunches only),and breadshop (closed wed) in Champagne village 2km.

Remarks	Water available on right bank immediately below Ecl.39 - no rings etc. There are a couple of very small new concrete quays between here and Maxilly - too samll and shallow for barges.

Mooring	Adequate - on left bank just above ecl. 42		50m Concrete quay with 4 substantial bollards – quay in poor state – fender well. Depth 1.2m
Facilities & Costs	None				Not known
Local Amenities	Maxilly village -10 minutes walk away - Boulangerie, small general grocers and a bar-restaurant.

Remarks	A bit industrial but a pleasant village almost at the beginning (or end) of the canal
